go up in smoke は、「燃えて煙となって消えてしまう」というイメージから比喩的に、計画や希望、積み重ねてきたものなどがダメになる意味を表しているくだけたイディオム表現。
日本語訳としては、”おじゃんになる，露と消える、はかなく消える，水の泡となる”などなど、いろいろと当て嵌まりそうです。

All my plans went up in smoke.
「僕の計画は全部パーになった。」

When the business went bankrupt, twenty years of hard work went up in smoke.　[cb]
