submerge（サブマージ）
動 〜を水に沈める，〜を覆い隠す
　　　水没する，潜水する
The submarine slowly submerged.
「潜水艦はゆっくりと水に潜った。」

「アリスはトムのことを忘れようと仕事に没頭した。」

invisible（インビジブル）
形 目に見えない，気づかれない，目に付かない
visible は ”目に見える，明らかな，目立つ”。
an invisible man　（透明人間）
This house is invisible from the street.
「この家は通りからは見えません。」
invisibly　…　副 目につかないように

orbit（オービット）
名 軌道，勢力範囲
動 軌道を描いて回る，〜を軌道に乗せる
The satellite is now in orbit.
「その人工衛星は現在 軌道上にあります。」
The Moon orbits the Earth.
「月は地球の周りを回る。」
orbital　…　形 軌道の

hemisphere（ヘミスフィア）
名 （地球や球体の）半球，（脳の）半球
半分（hemi-）の球体（sphere）ということ。
the northern hemisphere　（北半球）
The equator divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres.
「赤道は地球を北と南半球に分けている。」

gravity（グラヴィティ）
名 重力、引力（gravitation），重大性，深刻さ
Why does an apple fall to the ground?
「どうしてリンゴは地面に落ちるの？」
Because there is gravity.
「重力があるからだよ。」

meditate（メディテイト）
動 熟考する，黙想・瞑想する，〜を企てる
He meditated on the meaning of life.
「彼は人生の意味について考えを巡らせた。」
I meditate 15 minutes everyday.
「私は毎日１５分間瞑想します。」

reek（リーク）
動 悪臭を放つ，匂いがする
名 悪臭，臭気
His breath reeked of alcohol.
「彼の息はアルコールのひどい臭いがした。」
The case reeks of corruption.
「その事件は汚職の臭いがする。」
sticky（スティッキー）
形 粘々する，べとべとする，粘着質の
　　　蒸し暑い，厄介な
His hands were sticky with sugar.
「彼の手は砂糖でべとべとだった。」
hot and sticky　（暑くて蒸し蒸しした）
a sticky situation　（厄介な状況）
have sticky fingers　…　盗癖がある

downpour（ダウンポーァ）
名 どしゃ降り
特に突然で短い時間のもの。
I got caught in a sudden downpour on the way home.
「帰り道で急などしゃ降りにあいました。」

overcast（オウバーキャスト）
形 （空が）雲に覆われた，どんよりした
　　　《裁縫》かがり縫いの
The sky was completely overcast.
「空はすっかり雲に覆われていた。」
His face was overcast with sadness.
「彼の顔は悲しみに曇っていた。」
