punctual（パンクチュアル）
形 時間に正確な，時間に几帳面な
　　　時間通りの
決められた時間（期日）ぴったりなこと。
He is always very punctual.
「彼はいつも時間にきっちりしています。」
punctuality　…　名 時間厳守
punctually　…　副 時間通りに，几帳面に

stature（スタチャー）
名 身長，名声，良い評判，ステータス
I saw a man of short stature with black hair.
「黒髪で低い背丈の男を見ました。」
gain in stature　（名声・良い評判を得る） statue（スタチュー）は”像，彫像”。

detain（ディテイン）
動 〜を拘留する，引き留める
The man was detained for questioning.
「その男は尋問のため拘留された。」
detention　…　名 拘留，（罰としての）居残り
detainee　…　名 （政治的な理由での）被抑留者

drought（ドラウト）
名 干ばつ（旱魃），日照り
雨が降らず水不足の状態が長期間続いていること。
The country is suffering a severe drought.
「その国は深刻な干ばつの被害を被っている。」

timid（ティミド）
形 臆病な，内気な
She is as timid as a rabbit.
「彼女はひどく臆病です。」（イディオム）
He is timid with strangers.
「彼は見知らぬ人には内気なんです。」
timidly　…　副 臆病に，おずおずと
timidity　…　名 臆病，内気

diligent（ディリジェント）
形 勤勉な，精を出す，（仕事などが）念入りな
He is diligent in his studies.
「彼は勉学に熱心です。」
diligence　…　名 勤勉, 精励
diligently　…　副 熱心に，念入りに

dilute（ダイルート）
動 〜を薄める、希釈する，〜を弱める
形 薄めた，水っぽい
液体に水などを加えて薄めること。
First dilute the bleach with water.
「まず、漂白剤を水で希釈します。」

vend（ベンド）
動 販売する，売り歩く，行商する
You are not allowed to vend here.

poke（ポーク）
動 突く，つつく，〜を突っ込む
　　　突き出す，顔を出す
